Armada by Ernest Cline Review

armadaGenre: Science Fiction

Plot: Zack Lightman, high school senior, is ranked number 6 in the world in his favorite video game, Armada. One day, he thinks he might need to take a break from playing it as he sees an enemy ship from his game flying outside his school window. Soon after, Zack finds out that his skills are needed in the upcoming battle against an alien attack.

My thoughts: I was a bit hesitant to read this book as I have never been a “gamer”. I dabbled in Atari and Super Nintendo as a kid, but it was never something that I truly loved. That being said, this book was still an extremely fun adventure. There were many gaming references that whizzed over my head but they didn’t affect my understanding of the story. The story surprised me in several places and didn’t go in the direction that I expected it to (which was a good thing). Cline is extremely gifted as a writer and creative with his plots…he is very skilled at world building…I felt like I was walking beside Zack throughout the story. The main character Zack develops through the story and is someone you really want to root for.

This book would cater to a large audience…there is something in it for almost everyone. It’s the kind of book that people who don’t like to read could really enjoy, especially if they prefer video games (i.e. adolescent boys). I have never considered myself a fan of Science Fiction but this book has me questioning that now.

My Rating: 4/5 stars…Read it!
